<p>upgrading
Upgrading technologies are separation technologies based on physical factors, such as size, weight, density, shape, colour, and so on. At Flower Seed Technology B.V. we make a distinction between the following three upgrading technologies:
Traditional Upgrading
Traditional Upgrading technologies are separation technologies based on the weight and/or the shape of the seed. These technologies include, among others, cleaning by means of a brushing machine, separation by means of a gravity table, calibration and separation by means of an inclined draper and/or an air blower.
Special Upgrading
Special Upgrading technologies are liquid separation technologies based on the density of the seed. By means of Special Upgrading it is possible to separate a seed lot into two to four fractions, each fraction having a different quality. As Special Upgrading technologies are liquid separations, the seed is dried dried back to storage moisture after being separated. The shelf life of Special Upgraded seed is one year or more.
Advantages of Special Upgrading:
· increased percentage of usable plants
· increased percentage of uniform plants
Super Upgrading
Super Upgrading technologies are improved Special Upgrading technologies. Super Upgrading technologies are especially suitable for lots having a very poor quality, i.e. lots having a TP (total percentage of usable plants for the grower) of less than 60%. As with Special Upgrading, it is possible to separate a seed lot into two to four fractions, each fraction having a different quality. In addition, the quality of the individual fractions is also improved, resulting in a higher percentage of usable plants than when using Special Upgrading technologies. As Super Upgrading technologies are liquid separations, the seed is dried dried back to storage moisture after being separated. The shelf life of Special Upgraded seed is one year or more.
Advantages of Super Upgrading:

At Flower Seed Technology B.V. we are working continuously to optimise existing seed treatments but also to develop new seed treatments.
Existing treatments may be adjusted and/or optimised, depending on necessity – one can think of, among others, changing market requirements or increased quality standards.
New treatments are developed, based on new ideas, research results published by universities and institutes, questions and new requirements from customers and/or sales representatives.
As a service to our customers, we offer the possibility of contract research. You can think of having existing technologies being applied to crops not mentioned in our catalogue, to have existing treatments being adapted to better fit specific needs, to develop a new treatment in close cooperation with the customer, or to have specific, seed technology related questions being investigated.. The price of contract research is € 100.00 per hour.

Storage recommendations
General
Moisture and temperature conditions may affect the quality of seed. In general both humidity and temperature should be relatively low to best preserve the quality of the seed. Although each crop has its own unique requirements, as a rule of thumb it is best to keep the relative humidity of the storage environment between 30% and 35% and the temperature between 5°C and 15°C. For Cyclamen, however, it is recommended to keep the relative humidity of the storage environment at 50%.
Primed and/or upgraded seeds are more sensitive to sub-optimum temperature and humidity conditions than non primed and/or upgraded seeds. For primed and/or upgraded seeds, as a rule of thumb it is best to keep the relative humidity of the storage environment between 30% and 35% and the temperature at 5° Celsius.
Treated seed
After application of the seed treatment(s), we dry down the seed to the proper moisture level and pack it in an air tight container or package. At that point the humidity of the seed is ideal with respect to storage. We recommend to store the air tight packed seed between 5° and 15°C. If the seed was primed, it is best to store the air tight packed seed at 5°C.
Note: When opening the air tight container or package, the humidity inside the container or package may change. It is recommended to close the container or package as quickly as possibly, to keep the moisture content as close as possible to the proper content.
Note: When seeds are brought from a low temperature environment (e.g. a refrigerator) to a higher temperature environment (e.g. the sowing department), it is recommended to keep the seed inside the air tight container or package until the temperature of the seed is equal to the temperature of the ‘new’ environment, to prevent condensation.
